FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
JANE VOSS & HOYLE OSBORNE • CAFFE LENA • Sunday, September 25 • 7 p.m.
Acclaimed American roots singer Jane Voss and her piano-playing partner, Hoyle Osborne, will appear at Caffe Lena, in Saratoga Springs, on Sunday, September 25, at 7 pm.
An evening with Voss & Osborne is a kind of musical adventure, carried along by the dynamic interplay of two great artists at the top of their game.
Voss has all of America in her singing. Every performance includes powerful readings of great contemporary and original songs, as well as rare and classic gems of blues, folk, and popular song, from Hoagy Carmichael to the Beatles, from Randy Newman to Bessie Smith. She is often compared to the legendary mid-Twentieth-Century French singer and icon Edith Piaf.
Her own songs draw on all these traditions, and have been covered by such great folk artists as Rosalie Sorrels, Chuck Pyle, Jody Stecher and Kate Brislin, and the late Dave Van Ronk. Many of her songs, with their well-crafted lyrics and flowing, singable melodies, have the ring of instant classics.
Voss has been touring nationally for over thirty years. Her first East Coast date, in 1972, was at Caffe Lena.
Since 1976, Voss has performed and recorded with the consummate piano artist Hoyle Osborne. Osborne is the perfect match to Voss in the subtlety and authority of his musicianship. His gorgeous, often intricate accompaniments provide a rich setting to embrace Voss’s voice and guitar. Osborne has also become known for his solo ragtime piano stints at The Diamond Belle Saloon in Durango, Colo., over the last 15 years, building a following that extends around the world.
The newest Voss & Osborne CD, Beyond the Boundaries, captures the bare-bones, unembellished, yet amazingly full sound of the duo – voice, piano, guitar – live in the studio, in a program that ranges from Voss’s autobiographical rewrite of the old blues “Things About Comin’ My Way,” to the contemporary satire of Randy Newman’s “It’s a Jungle Out There.” Voss’s newest songs, including “Go to Sleep Now,” a lullaby for people who do too much, and the honky-tonk passion of “If You Love Me (Let Me Know),” mingle with songs like John Lennon’s psychedelic “Across the Universe” and Eric Idle’s astronomical romp, “The Galaxy Song.” A sparkling new rendition of Voss’s classic “Keep in Mind (That I Love You),” among her best-loved, most widely sung and recorded songs, rounds out the new collection.
Van Dyke Parks calls the CD “the perfect antidote to road rage,” and says the duo’s music “has great heart, soul, and incite.” Songwriter Bob Franke says, “If passion and literacy were in fashion, these folks would be big stars. They are a treasure to those of us fortunate enough to have encountered them.”
When their first record was issued in 1981, Stereo Review called it “... the essence of entertainment – without the clap-trap,” and the San Francisco Examiner praised their “… magnificent, urgent renditions of all manner of songs.” After nearly three decades of creative partnership, their work has only grown richer and deeper.
Osborne’s newest disc, Panazon, was hailed by Max Morath, the dean of ragtime piano players, as “A hot-then-subtle mix of sturdy ragtime and dancing Latin themes.” The CD features Osborne’s original suite, “Scenes from the Four Corners,” including two pieces which were award winners in the Scott Joplin International Ragtime Foundation’s composition contest.
Voss and Osborne met and formed their partnership in the San Francisco Bay Area. They now live in New Mexico. They have played concerts and festivals across the United States, in Canada, and overseas, and have appeared on the national radio programs Fresh Air, All Things Considered, Mountain Stage, West Coast Live, and World Café. They have been featured performers at Old Songs Festival in Altamont, and appeared last year in the Old Songs concert series in Voorheesville.
The Caffe Lena performance begins at 7 p.m. General admission is $12, $10 for members of Caffe Lena. Information and reservations: 518/583-0022, or on-line at www.caffelena.com For more information about Jane Voss & Hoyle Osborne, go to www.janevoss.net.
