Get to the Heart
words and music by Jane Voss
Hear me talkin’ to ya, I can’t do it alone,
I’m strainin’ just tryin’ to get through.
Sure I got the help of this old microphone,
Still there’s somethin’s left up to you.
Here’s each of us enclosed in our separate existence,
We might as well be light-years apart;
But I’ll spell out my soul and try to bridge the distance,
And try to get across to your heart – you know,
I’m only tryin’ to get to the heart
It’s awfully hard to hear above the roar of the crowd,
It’s hard to hear your own inner voice call,
When the sirens of success are all crying out loud,
And money hollers loudest of all:
“You owe it to yourself, you could make yourself a killin’,
Get rich and famous quick if you’re smart.”
But I don’t care about a hundred million,
I only care to make it to your heart – that’s all;
I’m only tryin’ to get to the heart.
Look at all the people fall all over each other,
Tryin’ to do a thing that hasn’t been done;
Just hopin’ they’ll hit on the next great sensation,
Be the hottest thing under the sun.
Now I don’t want to set the world on fire,
I only hope to strike a little spark;
To see it in your eyes, it is my one desire,
I’m only tryin’ to get your heart – that’s all;
I’m only tryin’ to get to the heart.
Getting ahead is all the rage and the fashion,
Got to play it mean and play it cool.
If you lay yourself bare, and you play it for passion,
You’re playin’ it like a fool.
But the only way I know is the way I gotta do it,
That’s to give it everything that I’ve got;
And where I aim to go, if I can get down to it,
Is straight to the bottom of your heart, you know,
I’m only tryin’ to get your heart – that’s all;
I’m only tryin’ to get to the heart
